Happiness at work is a mindset which allows you to maximize performance and achieve your potential. You do this by actively managing the high and lows you experience at work, whether working alone or with others. We are proud to be the leaders in delivering this program in Australia with our Director Jane Anderson being the first person currently accredited in Australia. Jane has been delivering this program as part of building Leaderships and Health and Wellbeing inititatives to organisations.
There are three types of happiness. Happiness at Work is a type of state happiness, which means that it is relatively stable, but can be maximized through conscious effort. It is driven by the 5 Cs of Contribution, Conviction, Commitment, Culture, and Confidence, which are supported by Pride, Trust, and Recognition.
The research by Jess Pryce-Jones of Iopener in her book "Happiness at Work, Maximising your Psycholigical Capital" found those who were happiest were:
- focussed on task 80% of their time at work, compared to the unhappiest staff spending 40% of their time on task (more productive)
- likely to stay in their roles for 2 years, as opposed to those who were unhappy and planned to stay a year (increased retention)
- had.75 days of unplanned leave, compared to those who were considered unhappy; they spend 7 days on unplanned leave per year (reduced absenteeism)
There are some fundamental principles behind understanding Happiness at Work:
- Individuals can take responsibility for their own levels of happiness
- Happiness at Work can be built and maintained
- Happiness at Work is possible for anyone

How is this different from job satisfaction and engagement?
- We can see from our data that job satisfaction and engagement are different from happiness at work in the following ways:
- Job satisfaction and engagement do not map onto the 5Cs in exactly same way and in the same accelerating amounts as happiness at work.
- Happiness at work leads to job satisfaction and engagement: they don’t work the other way round. This suggests that they are ‘smaller’ concepts and therefore of less importance.
- The items we work with operate at two levels: superficial and deep. We can clearly see this in our consulting work and that’s why it’s such a powerful and fast-moving process. Traditional job satisfaction and engagement surveys do not work similarly.
- Job satisfaction and engagement surveys were mostly developed in the 70s and 80s when working practices were very different and much less reliant on knowledge workers. This new audit tool was developed over the past 5 years by working with a relevant audience.
For all these reasons we know what we have is robust, reliable and relevant.
As part of this program you will be requested to complete a brief 15-20min questionnaire about your feelings toward your work. The results of the questionnaire will be available to you at your workshop. Your results are confidential known only to the facilitator, however you will have an opportunity to share and discuss the findings on the day that you attend the training.
